Glass is green!

Glass is Green! ImageFor years, we have been installing high efficiency glass in buildings and homes to help customers reduce the cost of heating or cooling, or to negate the effects of harsh sunlight, which can fade and break down drapes, upholstery, carpets and art work.  Insulated glass combined with laminated glass can even reduce noise pollution.  Low emisitivity (Low-E) coatings and thermally insulated glass, with an air space between panes, have both been shown to save big bucks on energy bills. Until recently, many of these coatings produced an undesirable purple or pink hue when viewed from certain angles, but the technology has improved and today the glass is indistinguishable from regular, clear glass.

In an effort to reduce energy consumption, the government has mandated that all new homes use Low-E coated glass.  In addition, for older homes, the recently passed stimulus package includes a window replacement tax credit of up to $1,500 for homeowners who replace energy-wasting windows with energy-efficient ones.  Storm windows are also included in this package. Maybe now is the time to replace old glass with high efficiency glass?  Visit http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_taxcredits for more information.

Even regular glass, with no coatings or special insulating properties, has many green properties as a construction material.  Today, people are looking for goods that last, goods with less impact.  Glass is strong and durable, and virtually maintenance free.  It doesn’t rot or rust, it’s easy to clean, and it doesn’t fade or need painting after a few years.  These characteristics, combined with wonderful design flexibility make glass an excellent green building material.   And it appears the word is out.  In addition to traditional applications such as shower enclosures and tabletops, we are beginning to see our customers request kitchen backsplashes, vanity tops, interior doors, and even floors and staircases, all made from GLASS!
